Nestled in the Tualatin Valley west of Portland, Hillsboro is a vibrant city full of young up-and-comers. A high contingency of high-tech companies like Intel has formed what’s called “The Silicon Forest” in Hillsboro, although the atmosphere in town is anything but plastic. The city maintains more than 20 parks where citizens enjoy the perennially mild climate. Farmers markets are held five days a week from May until September. Public buses and light rail make commuting simple. Every year the city hosts Oregon’s largest air show, the Oregon International Air Show, and a free summer concert series at Shute Park. The Washington County Fair is also held in Hillsboro.
Students of Pacific University’s Health Professions Campus and the west campus of Oregon Health & Science University all reside in Hillsboro, and the allure of the thriving suburban town makes it a convenient location for students commuting to Portland. Check Trimet and MAX transportation services before renting if you don’t have a car, as they make getting around the area easy and affordable.
Orenco Station is a favorite neighborhood for its walkability and small-town feel. It’s home to a small park and one of Hillsboro’s farmers markets, in addition to all the amenities you might need—grocery stores, shopping, and entertainment.
If the prices in Orenco are too steep for your budget, look nearby in Creekside, which sits at the intersect of Baseline Road and 53rd Avenue. It’s more affordable, a short walk from Noble Woods, and still within biking distance of Orenco’s greatest perks.
Shute Road is another popular location for apartment complexes and student-friendly housing. Around Cornell Road you’ll find easy access to the Hillsboro library, as well as quality trails around Dawson Creek Park.
Finally, ample housing options exist in the area around Intel, where many facilities are new, renovated, or currently underway.
