Kent is a city in Ohio and the largest city in Portage County. It is located along the Cuyahoga River in Northeast Ohio on the western edge of the county. Today Kent is a college town best known as the home of the main campus of Kent State University. Students can find ample amounts of off campus student housing complexes throughout Kent, Ohio.
Kent is known as "The Tree City" while residents are referred to as "Kentites". Kent's location along the Cuyahoga River and later the Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal and multiple railroad lines made it attractive initially for the establishment of small gristmills for the production of flour and various factories.
Cultural elements in Kent include various arts, environmental, and entertainment events during the year. The Kent Stage, located downtown, is a performance venue for a variety of arts performances in music and theater. Students can find student apartments and visit one of the nearly 20 parks and preserves in Kent. The largest park is the 56-acre Fred Fuller park along the Cuyahoga River. The park includes the Kramer Fields baseball and softball complex, which contains four fields, two of which are lighted. Several of the parks along the Cuyahoga River are on or near areas of historical significance.
As of 2013, the Portage Hike and Bike Trail was under construction or in planning, with several phases already completed in Kent.
There is only one university located in Kent. Students can find convenient college apartments near The main campus of Kent State University, which is located in the southeastern part of the city.
