Located just 10 miles south of Minneapolis, Bloomington is much more than a sleepy suburb. The 4th largest city in Minnesota, it boasts an extensive city park system (more than 1,000 square feet of green space per capita). It’s bordered to the west by Hyland Lake Park Reserve and to the southeast by the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge. It’s home to the Mall of America, which makes jobs more abundant in Bloomington than in either Minneapolis or Saint Paul, and to the Minnesota Zoo. And if that’s not enough to get Bloomington noticed, it’s the Pickleball capital of Minnesota!
Students of Normandale Community College call Bloomington home, as do many others commuting from area colleges, universities, and specialty schools. Connected to the big city by I-35W and I-494, Bloomington has more than enough housing for students to choose from.
West Bloomington offers the closest walk or bike to campus, sitting just south of Normandale. It also butts up against the Hyland Lake Park Reserve, which has a ski area and Nordic ski jumps for area students to enjoy.
Brookside Park is a little further from campus, but popular for Harrison Picnic Grounds, Moir Park, and Central Park, all of which claim a generous stretch of Ninemile Creek. Brookside also puts commuters close to I-35.
As the northernmost community in Bloomington, Wanda Miller Pond puts tenants as close as they can get to Minnesota, without sacrificing any lakeside charm. Mount Normandale Lake Park sits just west of the Wanda Miller neighborhood, and several new and updated complexes sit near or along Wanda Miller Pond and Paulys Pond. Staying close to Hwy 34 makes commuting north or south easy.
Other housing can always be found along the I-494 corridor on the north side of town, and along I-35 to the west. With so many lakes, parks, and green spaces, even the most industrial sections of Bloomington still bring residents closer to the great outdoors.
